Each frame is made to order by one of our framing workshops, so the exact shade and profile may vary slightly from the photos.
A bearded man with short brown hair turns his head to look aside, wearing a black doublet, red sleeves, a white ruff, a grey fur-edged cloak and a heavy gold chain with a medallion. His hand rests near a scatter of coins and a folded letter on a green-covered table, a sword hilt beside him. At the left stand a small white marble statuette of a woman and a fragment of a torso. Books lie on a shelf behind, the painter's signature sits at the upper left, and a cartouche of Latin letters hangs at the upper right.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum dates the portrait to about 1567 to 1568 and notes that a letter in the picture is addressed to Titian in Venice. A later cartouche gives the sitter's age as 51 and the date 1566, and the pose, with arms and head moving in opposite directions, is unusual in Titian's portraits. The painting comes from the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm.
The original: on canvas, c. 1567-1568; Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, c. 1488–1576) was an Italian painter of the Venetian Renaissance, born in Pieve di Cadore. Sources disagree on his training; early writers name Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione among his teachers. He worked mainly in Venice, with periods in Padua, Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino, and became court painter to Emperor Charles V in 1533 and later worked for Philip II of Spain. He painted portraits, religious scenes and mythological subjects, using rich colour and increasingly loose brushwork; his late Poesie series for Philip II drew on Ovid. His work is held by the Uffizi, the Museo del Prado and the National Gallery, London.

9 Art Prints was founded by author Arif Anwar around two simple ideas: that great art should reach far beyond the familiar Western canon, and that fine art reproductions should be made with exceptional materials.
So we seek out remarkable artists and traditions from around the world, then reproduce them using carefully sourced images, archival giclée printing, and fine art papers from Hahnemühle.

Unframed prints travel rolled in a protective tube. This is the standard and safest way to ship a print: a rolled sheet cannot be creased or have its corners knocked in transit. Framed prints arrive ready to hang.
Hahnemühle paper is very delicate. Its soft, textured matte surface marks far more easily than ordinary poster paper, so handle it with care. Wash and dry your hands first, or wear clean cotton gloves if you have them. Hold the sheet by its edges with both hands, and never touch the printed surface.
To flatten your print:
Frame your print behind glass as soon as you can, and keep it flat until then. Hang it out of direct sunlight and away from damp and heat, such as bathrooms and radiators. If it gathers dust, use a soft, dry brush; never water or cleaning products.
Unsure about anything? Any professional framer will know how to handle and flatten your print, and you can always write to us before you unroll it.
Our principal fine-art papers include Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm. German Etching has a substantial, lightly textured surface that works exceptionally well for paintings and richly coloured works. Photo Rag has a smoother cotton surface suited to graphic, modernist and highly detailed imagery.
Paper is selected according to the character of the artwork rather than using one generic stock for everything. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Giclée is a fine-art printing process using archival pigment inks and high-resolution inkjet printing, made to reproduce subtle colour gradations, fine detail and tonal depth.
Large-format reproduction depends heavily on the quality of the underlying artwork file. We source the highest-resolution material available and prepare each image for print rather than simply enlarging a small internet image.
That is especially important with historic paintings, posters and archival works where source quality varies considerably.
Our framed pieces use solid-wood frames, handmade to order, with low-reflection glazing. There is no mount: the print fills the frame. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Screens emit light; paper reflects it, so no physical print can be identical to every monitor or phone display. We prepare our artwork specifically for print and aim for accurate colour, contrast and tonal reproduction.
The texture and surface of fine-art paper also give the finished piece a physical depth that cannot be shown completely on a screen.
“I am not just impressed; I'm blown away by the quality and overall experience. The wood grain in the frame is beautiful and the print quality is superb.”
