Two men on ladders lower the body from the cross to a bearded man in a blue robe patterned with gold, while a woman in green with a gold brocade skirt steadies a ladder. Below, a woman in a deep blue mantle and white wimple sinks to the ground beside a second veiled woman and a figure in red, near a skull and bones. The olive border is crowded with grey and pink acanthus, a lion, birds, a man shouldering a long-handled spade and mourners over a fallen figure.
This Deposition introduces the service of Vespers in the Hours of the Passion, in the prayer book made for Charles the Bold. Miniature and border were planned together: the Getty reads the border scene of Adam and Eve mourning the dead Abel as a prefiguration of the Virgin mourning over the body of Jesus.
The original: a folio from the Prayer Book of Charles the Bold, tempera colours, gold leaf, gold paint, silver paint and ink on parchment, written in Ghent and illuminated in Antwerp about 1471; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
The Vienna Master of Mary of Burgundy is the name scholars give the illuminator of the Hours of Mary of Burgundy, duchess of Burgundy, now in Vienna. Only a small number of miniatures are linked to this Flemish artist, active in the 1470s, but they show deep feeling, subtle atmosphere and closely observed detail, and much of the sharp rise in naturalism in Flemish illumination around 1470 has been credited to this one hand. A Deposition of about 1471 is in the J. Paul Getty Museum.

What paper do you use?
Our principal fine-art papers include
Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and
Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm.
German Etching has a substantial, lightly textured surface that works
exceptionally well for paintings and richly coloured works. Photo Rag
has a smoother cotton surface suited to graphic, modernist and highly
detailed imagery.
Paper is selected according to the character of the artwork rather than
using one generic stock for everything. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
What does “giclée” mean?
Giclée is a fine-art printing process using archival pigment inks and
high-resolution inkjet printing, made to reproduce subtle colour gradations,
fine detail and tonal depth.
Will large prints still look sharp?
Large-format reproduction depends heavily on the quality of the underlying
artwork file. We source the highest-resolution material available and
prepare each image for print rather than simply enlarging a small internet image.
That is especially important with historic paintings, posters and archival
works where source quality varies considerably.
What about your framed prints?
Our framed pieces use solid-wood frames, handmade to order, with low-reflection glazing. There is no mount: the print fills the frame. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Will the colours look exactly like my screen?
Screens emit light; paper reflects it, so no physical print can be identical
to every monitor or phone display. We prepare our artwork specifically for
print and aim for accurate colour, contrast and tonal reproduction.
The texture and surface of fine-art paper also give the finished piece
a physical depth that cannot be shown completely on a screen.
