Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) is celebrated as a pioneer of pure abstraction, but before his Bauhaus years he produced a small body of commercial illustration work — including this extraordinary Abrikosov Chocolate advertisement, one of the earliest examples of avant-garde sensibility applied to commercial design. The sinuous figures and jewel-bright palette show a mind already pulling toward the decorative freedom that would define his later masterworks.
