Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter widely credited as the pioneer of abstract art and one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Teaching at the Bauhaus from 1922 to its closure in 1933, he developed a systematic theory of colour and form set out in Concerning the Spiritual in Art and Point and Line to Plane. His Bauhaus-period works — the Small Worlds portfolio, his lithographs and compositions in grey, violet, and blue — combine lyrical abstraction with geometric rigour and remain touchstones for collectors of modernist art.
