Jean Delville Prints

About Jean Delville

Jean Delville was a Belgian painter, poet and writer on art, born on 19 January 1867 in Leuven. He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and began as a realist painter. In the early 1890s he showed at the Paris Salons of the Rose+Croix, run by the mystic writer Joséphin Péladan, and in 1896 he launched his own Salons of Idealist Art in Brussels. He won the Belgian Prix de Rome in 1895, taught at the Glasgow School of Art in the early 1900s, and was an active member of the Theosophical Society, a movement exploring spiritual and mystical ideas. He died in Brussels in 1953.

Jean Delville was a leading Belgian Symbolist, painting dreamlike, spiritual scenes with glowing colour and flowing figures. The Death of Orpheus (1893) and The Treasures of Satan (1895) are both in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, and his large School of Plato (1898) is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Jean Delville prints: reproductions of paintings and drawings by the Belgian Symbolist Jean Delville, made between 1888 and 1940. The collection includes The Death of Orpheus (1893), L'Ange des Splendeurs (1894), The Treasures of Satan (1895), Prometheus (1907) and L'Oubli des passions (1913).

This selection concentrates on Delville's mythological and spiritual subjects: Orpheus, Prometheus, Parsifal, angels, oracles and allegories of good and evil. It includes both his glowing, colour-filled paintings and darker drawings such as The Idol of Perversity and Mysteriosa. Many show flowing figures, swirling forms and strong blues, reds and golds.

The large mythological paintings suit living rooms, libraries and studies, and the smaller drawings work well in hallways and reading corners. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
