Koloman Moser Prints

About Koloman Moser

Koloman Moser, known to friends as Kolo, was an Austrian artist and designer, born in Vienna in 1868 and died there in 1918. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and then at the city's School of Applied Arts, where he later taught as a professor. In 1897 he was a founding member of the Vienna Secession, the group of artists who broke away from the official academy to make room for new, modern art.

Koloman Moser worked across almost every kind of design. He shaped the look of the Secession's magazine Ver Sacrum, made posters, book designs and stained glass, and in 1903 co-founded the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops) with the architect Josef Hoffmann, to produce well-made furniture, metalwork and household objects at a time of cheap mass production. He also designed Austrian stamps and banknotes, and the stained-glass windows of Otto Wagner's Steinhof church in Vienna (1904–05).

Koloman Moser prints: reproductions of pattern designs, lithographs and paintings by the Viennese Secession artist and designer Koloman Moser, made between 1898 and 1913. Works in the collection include Zephyrus Printed Silk (1901), Moon Blossom Woven Upholstery Fabric (1901), Astarta Wallpaper (1901), Loie Fuller as The Archangel (1902) and Flowering Chestnut Tree (1912).

This selection concentrates on Moser's repeating patterns for silk, wallpaper, upholstery and floor coverings, most from 1901, with stylised flowers, leaves, shells, faces and waves. Many are in strict black and white; others use flat, bright colour. It also includes his covers for the magazine Ver Sacrum, poster and calendar designs, and later paintings of flowering trees and a garden.

The black-and-white patterns suit hallways, kitchens, bathrooms and modern living rooms, and work well hung in pairs or grids; the flowering trees suit bedrooms. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
