About Ludwig Deutsch

Ludwig Deutsch was an Austrian-born painter, born on 13 May 1855 in Vienna into a well-off Jewish family. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in the 1870s, then in 1878 moved to Paris, where he settled for good and began showing at the Paris Salon. He became a French citizen and later signed his work Louis Deutsch. He died in Paris on 9 April 1935.

Ludwig Deutsch belongs to Orientalism, the nineteenth-century European fashion for painting scenes of North Africa and the Middle East. He visited Egypt several times, bringing back sketches and photographs of Cairo. Back in his Paris studio he used these to paint scenes of guards, scholars, scribes and people at prayer with highly polished, almost photographic detail. Typical works include The Chess Players (1896) and The Scribe.

Ludwig Deutsch prints: reproductions of the Orientalist paintings Ludwig Deutsch made in Paris between 1883 and 1920. The collection includes The Scribe (1894), The Chess Game (1896), Guarding the Palace (1897), Morning Prayers (1902) and The Procession of the Mahmal through the Streets of Cairo (1909).

This selection concentrates on Deutsch's single figures and small groups in Cairo interiors and doorways: palace guards, scholars, scribes, musicians, dealers, a water seller and men at prayer. Most are painted in close, polished detail, with carved wood, tiled walls, rugs and brass against warm ochre and brown tones. The Nubian guard paintings are also offered as a pair.

The warm, detailed scenes suit studies, libraries, dining rooms and entryways, and the tall single-figure paintings work well on narrow walls or in pairs. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
