Ludwig Deutsch (1855–1935) was an Austrian-born painter who became the supreme master of Orientalist interior realism — an artist whose obsessive attention to Islamic tilework, carved stucco, brass lanterns, and embroidered robes produced paintings of almost hallucinatory material richness. Living alternately in Vienna and Paris, he made multiple journeys to Cairo, where he assembled a vast collection of props, costumes, and architectural documentation. His guards, merchants, scholars, and palace attendants are among the most majestic figures in 19th-century painting.
