Ludwig Deutsch (1855–1935) was an Austrian Orientalist painter who made Cairo his second home and devoted his career to documenting Egyptian and Ottoman architecture, dress, and daily life with a technical precision unmatched in the genre. His interiors — guards, scribes, merchants in the corridors of the Mamluk and Ottoman Cairo — are painted with such fine detail and chromatic richness that they feel simultaneously documentary and transcendent. His works are now major highlights of Orientalist sales at Christie's and Sotheby's.
