Marcel Roux Prints

About Marcel Roux

Marcel Roux was a French painter and printmaker, born on 11 September 1878 in Bessenay, near Lyon, and trained in Lyon. He was a devout Catholic. He died in Chartres on 19 January 1922, aged 43.

Marcel Roux is best known for his etchings, which are dark and visionary, full of death, temptation and the suffering he saw in the decadent years around 1900. His best-known series, Dance of Death (1904 to 1905), draws on the old dance of death tradition in fifteen plates. In them Death visits a miser, a drinker, a worker, a child, a genius and others, and the series closes with Christ, "He who conquered Death". The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York holds the series. He also illustrated books, including an edition of Edgar Allan Poe's A Descent into the Maelstrom printed in 1920.

Marcel Roux prints: reproductions of the Symbolist etchings the French printmaker Marcel Roux made in the early 1900s. The collection includes Danse Macabre (1904), The Hospital (1904), The Puppets (1905), Offering to Moloch (1908) and Faucheuse (The Reaper).

This selection concentrates on Roux's dark etchings of death, vice and suffering, including plates on alcohol, poverty and the hospital, and imagined creatures such as The Spider, The Nightbeast and The Monsters. The prints are in black ink with dense line work and deep shadow. Several come from the same years as his Dance of Death series.

The black-and-white etchings suit studies, libraries, reading rooms and hallways, and they work well grouped on a single wall. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
