Death leans in at the bedside while the patient stares out

An etching, printed with wide cream margins and signed in pencil 1er état — Marcel Roux. In a bare hospital room a tall shrouded figure stands at the left, hooded and faceless, leaning in with one hand extended toward a gaunt patient who sits wrapped in dark drapery, hollow-eyed, staring past it. Behind them a window, a bedside table, the sharp diagonal of a bed. Roux bit the plate in dense black lines that leave the room almost entirely in shadow. From the Symbolist danse macabre cycle that occupied him through the early 1900s.

Marcel Roux (1878–1922) was a French etcher from Lyon whose short career produced some of the blackest images in Symbolist printmaking — death dancing, reapers at work, spiders and plagues, all bitten into the plate with extraordinary technical control. He exhibited with the Salon d'Automne, was decorated for his war service, and died at forty-four.
