The Staircase

Always leading somewhere you cannot see

The Staircase: paintings, prints, illustrations and photographs in which stairs or steps are a main feature.

Works include John Singer Sargent's Staircase in Capri (1878), Edgar Degas's The Dance Class (with a Spiral Staircase), Léon Spilliaert's L'escalier, crépuscule jaune, Giovanni Battista Piranesi's etching The Round Tower and John William Waterhouse's Diogenes and A Roman Offering. Gustave Doré's engravings (Dante's Golden Ladder, fairy tales, The Raven) form the largest group, with fairy tale illustrations by Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. Contemporary photographs by Marcus Lenk and Pablo Meilán Campagnale are also included.

The selection is built around composition: in each work the steps lead the eye up, down or into the picture.

These works suit stairwells, landings and hallways, where the subject repeats the architecture around it. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
