Léon Spilliaert (1881–1946) was a Belgian Symbolist and self-taught artist whose lonely, vertiginous images of empty promenades, dark interiors, and solitary figures stand among the most psychologically penetrating works of the early 20th century. Working in Ostend in near-isolation due to chronic insomnia and digestive illness, he developed a style of extreme tonal contrast and spatial distortion — part Symbolism, part proto-Expressionism, part Surrealism avant la lettre — that anticipates Edward Hopper in America and Giorgio de Chirico in Italy. He is now regarded as one of the great hidden figures of early modernism.
