The Wind

Wind in art: paintings, engravings, woodblock prints and illustrations that show wind, gusts and storms through billowing sails, bending trees, blown clothing and rough seas. Artists include Arthur Rackham, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, J.M.W. Turner, Joaquín Sorolla, Kay Nielsen, Karl Wiener, Rembrandt, Katsushika Hokusai and Tom Thomson. The works range from Bruegel's ship engravings of the 1560s and Rembrandt's The Storm on the Sea of Galilee (1633) to Turner's seascapes, Hokusai's Ejiri in Suruga Province (1831), Thomson's The West Wind (1916) and early 20th-century fairy tale illustration. Typical subjects are sailing ships, storms at sea, the North Wind, Napoleon Crossing the Alps and travellers in a gust.

The selection is about something invisible, shown only through its effect on sails, trees, water and clothing.

The seascapes and storm scenes suit studies, living rooms and coastal homes; the wide compositions work above a sofa or desk. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
