Abraham Walkowitz (1878–1965) was a Russian-born American modernist painter and draughtsman who became one of the most dedicated chroniclers of Isadora Duncan — producing an estimated 5,000 drawings of the great dancer's movement over the course of his career. A regular exhibitor at Alfred Stieglitz's 291 gallery, he was among the first American artists to engage seriously with Cubism and abstraction, producing works of lyrical line and gestural freedom that occupy a unique space between European modernism and American expressionism.
