Mughal court painting reached its highest development under the emperors Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan in the 16th and 17th centuries — a tradition that fused Persian miniature technique with Mughal naturalism, Flemish realism, and a new interest in individual characterisation that produced some of the most psychologically penetrating portraits of the pre-modern world. The Mughal imperial atelier employed dozens of named master artists — Basawan, Manohar, Bichitr, Abu'l Hasan — working under direct royal supervision on portraits, historical narratives, and allegorical compositions of extraordinary refinement. Mughal portraits are now among the most prized objects in collections of South Asian art worldwide.
