White orchids and purple bands frame a calendar page for June

A row of white trumpet-shaped orchid blooms with lilac curling petals hangs across the top, and a mirrored pair closes the design below a calendar panel headed for June, bordered by olive-green leaf-and-tendril vines on a cream ground. Green seed pods on curling stems climb both sides over bands of purple and golden yellow. The sheet is a page from a lithographed Art Nouveau wall calendar.

Anna Sipkema (1877–1933) was a Dutch graphic designer and weaver. Trained at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijzers in Amsterdam, she taught drawing at a craft school for girls from 1904 and between 1901 and 1911 designed book covers, calendars and illustrations for publishers including C.A.J. van Dishoeck, G.B. van Goor and L.J. Veen. She is remembered chiefly for her Art Nouveau flower-and-leaf calendars for Van Dishoeck, after which she turned mainly to hand weaving. Her work is held by the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Drents Museum.
