Émile Prisse d'Avennes (1807–1879) was a French orientalist, archaeologist, and artist whose L'Art arabe (1869–1877) — a multi-volume survey of Islamic ornament, architecture, and decorative art in Cairo — produced the finest and most complete visual documentation of Islamic design ever published. His chromolithographic plates of geometric patterns, arabesque scrollwork, and architectural ornament remain both scholarly documents and works of graphic art in their own right, reproduced by designers and collectors ever since their first publication.
