Achille-Constant-Théodore-Émile Prisse d'Avennes (1807–1879) was a French architect, Orientalist, and archaeologist who spent twenty years in Egypt documenting its ancient and Islamic monuments before producing L'Art Arabe (1869–1877) — the definitive 19th-century survey of Islamic decorative art. His chromolithographic plates depicting the Quranic inscriptions, arabesques, muqarnas, and tilework of Cairo's medieval mosques remain the most beautiful documentary record of Islamic ornamentation ever produced, and are now among the most sought-after prints in the decorative arts market.
