Asai Chū (1856–1907) was a Meiji pioneer of Western-style oil painting in Japan — one of the first artists to train seriously in French academic technique and introduce it to a Japanese audience. Co-founder of the Meiji Fine Arts Society, he taught a generation of Japanese painters and produced works of remarkable directness and observation that mark the beginning of Japan's engagement with Western visual language.
