Carlos Schwabe (1866–1926) was a German-Swiss Symbolist painter and illustrator who became one of the defining visual voices of the Rose+Croix movement — creating the iconic poster for the first Salon de la Rose+Croix in 1892 and producing illustrations for Maeterlinck, Zola, and Baudelaire. His imagery — angelic figures, mystical allegories, botanical symbolism — is among the most refined and spiritually ambitious in the Symbolist canon. His illustration cycle for Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal is a masterpiece of Symbolist book art.
