The Shahnameh (Book of Kings, c.1010 CE) by Abu'l-Qasim Firdausi (c.940–1020 CE) is the world's longest epic poem by a single author — 60,000 couplets narrating the mythological and historical kings of Persia from creation to the Islamic conquest, and the foundational work of modern Persian literature. Its illustrated manuscripts, produced over five centuries in Herat, Tabriz, Shiraz, and Isfahan under Timurid, Safavid, and Mughal patronage, represent the apex of Persian court painting. Individual miniatures — created by anonymous workshop artists under royal commission — depict battles, divine interventions, romances, and supernatural encounters with a compositional sophistication and chromatic intensity that rank them among the great paintings of world art.
