Emilio Pettoruti (1892–1971) was an Argentine painter who studied in Florence and became the most important early practitioner of Cubism in Latin America. His 1924 exhibition in Buenos Aires caused a scandal comparable to the Armory Show in New York — audiences unused to Cubist fragmentation responded with bewilderment and outrage. His works — musicians, harlequins, still lifes — combine the rigour of European Cubism with a Southern warmth and chromatic exuberance that gives them a distinctly Argentine voice. He is now recognised as a key figure in the development of modern art in the Americas.
