A dense bouquet of peonies and roses fills an ink-drawn oval

A dense bouquet of full-blown peonies, roses and buds fills an oval medallion, rendered entirely in fine grey-brown ink line and wash with no other colour, a butterfly resting at the left edge of the bouquet. The oval sits within a rectangular gold-toned page bordered by a narrow blue-dotted wave rule and a wide outer band of repeating dark floral rosettes. The drawing comes from an album of flower paintings attributed to Fathallah Shirazi, a nineteenth-century Qajar artist.

Fathallah Shirazi was a painter of Qajar Iran, active from the 1850s to the 1880s. He is known above all for painted lacquer: pen boxes and mirror cases of papier-mâché, painted, gilded and varnished, with dated pieces from 1878 and 1881–82. He also worked in ink on paper, including an album of flower paintings of about 1880. His lacquer and his drawings are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
