Gaoquan Xingdun (高泉性潡, 1633–1695) was a Chinese-born Zen Buddhist monk who emigrated to Japan in 1661 and became one of the most important figures in the transmission of Chinese culture to Japan during the Edo period. As the third abbot of Manpuku-ji temple in Uji — the headquarters of the Ōbaku sect of Zen Buddhism — he brought with him the Chinese calligraphic tradition of the late Ming dynasty, producing works of monumental scale and formal authority that transformed Japanese calligraphic aesthetics. His calligraphy triptychs, written in the bold running script of the Chinese literati tradition, are treasured in Japanese temple collections and command the highest respect in the history of Sino-Japanese artistic exchange.
