A tartan-clad poet muses with a quill beneath a willow

A young man in a black gold-buttoned jacket, a red tartan kilt and plaid, checked stockings and a feathered bonnet reclines by a stream beneath a willow, a quill raised to his chin and a sheet of paper in his lap. Behind him a woman in a white dress and a wide hat, a red plaid stole over her shoulder, peers out from behind the tree. A moss-toned stone carved with an inscription stands beneath the willow's hanging boughs. Signed and dated at the lower left.

George Barbier (1882–1932) was the leading illustrator of French Art Deco fashion. From 1912 his pochoir plates for the Gazette du Bon Ton, Falbalas et Fanfreluches and the couture houses of Paquin, Worth and Poiret drew on Persian miniatures, Greek vases and the Ballets Russes, setting slender figures against flat, saturated colour. He also designed for the stage and illustrated Verlaine and Louÿs. His plates are held by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
