A man wearing a tall blue-grey feathered headdress stands in profile with his arms folded across his chest at one end of a canoe painted with a star motif. A woman in a coral-red dress with beaded trim and two feathers in her dark hair reclines at the other end, dangling a pale green leaf over the water and sending out ripples. The canoe and both figures are doubled by a mirror reflection below the waterline. A small brown bird stands on reeds at the lower left.
George Barbier (1882–1932) was the leading illustrator of French Art Deco fashion. From 1912 his pochoir plates for the Gazette du Bon Ton, Falbalas et Fanfreluches and the couture houses of Paquin, Worth and Poiret drew on Persian miniatures, Greek vases and the Ballets Russes, setting slender figures against flat, saturated colour. He also designed for the stage and illustrated Verlaine and Louÿs. His plates are held by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
