Slender birch trunks rise from a floor of fallen orange leaves

Slender white birch trunks with mossy green bases rise through a forest floor entirely carpeted in fallen orange and rust-coloured leaves. Small blue flowers and a few green shoots push up through the leaf litter at lower right, and dappled green foliage closes the composition overhead. No sky or horizon is shown; the canvas is filled edge to edge with trunks, leaves and undergrowth in a dense, textured pattern of autumn colour.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the leading figure of the Vienna Secession, which he co-founded in 1897.
