Two reclining figures flank a circular scene of family tenderness

Two reclining figures, one on each side, frame a central circular medallion in which a woman kneels beside a small child, a man's head bent close beside them, set against a wooded landscape. The whole composition sits within an ornate stone border decorated with floral garlands and swags. Inscriptions read IDYLLE at the lower left and G.K. 1884 at the lower right.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the leading figure of the Vienna Secession, which he co-founded in 1897. His golden period portraits and allegories — The Kiss, the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the Beethoven Frieze — combine mosaic-like ornament and gold leaf with an unflinching treatment of the body, and his square landscapes of the Attersee are among the most serene paintings of the era. His works are held by the Belvedere in Vienna, the Neue Galerie in New York and the Leopold Museum.
