A stern angular mask crowned with radiating rays represents Mars

A stylized, angular mask fills the sheet in flat white against black. A crown of straight rays fans upward from a small sunburst medallion at the brow; the eyes are narrow and deep-set beneath geometric brows, and the jaw is cut into flat faceted planes. Below the chin, the astrological glyph for Mars, a circle with an arrow, sits among four small stars. A printed monogram device appears at the lower left.

Henri van der Stok (1870–1946) turned to art after fourteen years as a Dutch naval officer. Largely self-taught apart from lessons with Philippe Zilcken and Willem van Konijnenburg, he worked in The Hague as a painter, sculptor, stained-glass designer and printmaker, making etchings, engravings, lithographs and woodcuts. He won a silver medal for his woodcuts in Utrecht and exhibited at the 1925 Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs. His prints are held by the Rijksmuseum, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
