An ibex with a deeply ridged horn stands atop angular mountain peaks

A long-horned ibex stands in profile atop angular mountain peaks under a near-black night sky scattered with stars, one a large sunburst. Its single ridged horn sweeps back over its head above a smaller second horn; wavy lines suggest snow or cloud beneath its hooves, and a small building rises at the right among the peaks. A lettered panel along the bottom reads CAPRICORNUS, beside a small printed monogram device.

Henri van der Stok (1870–1946) turned to art after fourteen years as a Dutch naval officer. Largely self-taught apart from lessons with Philippe Zilcken and Willem van Konijnenburg, he worked in The Hague as a painter, sculptor, stained-glass designer and printmaker, making etchings, engravings, lithographs and woodcuts. He won a silver medal for his woodcuts in Utrecht and exhibited at the 1925 Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs. His prints are held by the Rijksmuseum, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
