Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who developed fully abstract art years before Kandinsky, Mondrian, or Malevich — a discovery suppressed by her own instruction that her work not be exhibited until 20 years after her death. Her monumental series The Paintings for the Temple (1906–1915) constitutes one of the most extraordinary bodies of abstract art in history: large-scale, spiritually motivated works of extraordinary visual power, now held at the Moderna Museet Stockholm and shown at the Guggenheim New York to record-breaking audiences.
