Seven tan petals fan from one point, laced with blue and gold

Seven broad petals of flat tan radiate from a single point on brushed cream paper, two reaching left, one standing at the top, the rest sweeping right, with a large pear-shaped petal hanging below. Each is outlined in yellow, and blue lines loop through and across them on their own paths, crossing the yellow to leave narrow lens shapes. A red-orange seal sits in the top corner beside a line of the artist's handwriting.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who arrived at abstraction years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and working professionally as a botanical and landscape painter, she began in 1906 the vast cycle she called The Paintings for the Temple — swans, altarpieces, spirals and the ten great sheets of The Ten Largest — guided by her involvement with theosophy and the spiritualist group known as The Five. Convinced the work would not be understood in her lifetime, she left instructions that it not be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Her paintings are held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
