Petals and paired discs drift across flat orange

Bright orange carries a scatter of blossoms and discs. A circle rimmed in yellow holds a flower of cream and pink petals edged in blue. A lavender outline gathers yellow rings and blue discs; a maroon crescent and two coils sit below. Two dusty rose ovals overlap at the centre, crossed by a blue oval and a yellow one, each tipped with cream. A four-petalled bloom opens below, and a white daisy descends on a stem at the right.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who arrived at abstraction years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and working professionally as a botanical and landscape painter, she began in 1906 the vast cycle she called The Paintings for the Temple — swans, altarpieces, spirals and the ten great sheets of The Ten Largest — guided by her involvement with theosophy and the spiritualist group known as The Five. Convinced the work would not be understood in her lifetime, she left instructions that it not be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Her paintings are held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
