A pink bloom above looping white coils on mauve

Dusty mauve holds a large flower at the top, four pink petals and a cream one turning on a yellow centre. Below sit an olive disc and a black oval ringed in white beside a tall cream oval. Cream loops curl into a cursive form traced with pink, green and blue. White lines sweep the lower half into loops and spirals, with a gold oval among them and blue circles at the left. A snail rests on one line at the right.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who arrived at abstraction years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and working professionally as a botanical and landscape painter, she began in 1906 the vast cycle she called The Paintings for the Temple — swans, altarpieces, spirals and the ten great sheets of The Ten Largest — guided by her involvement with theosophy and the spiritualist group known as The Five. Convinced the work would not be understood in her lifetime, she left instructions that it not be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Her paintings are held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
