A lilac ground carries a pink disc of concentric rings at the upper left, crossed by dashed curves. Yellow ovals and pink almonds gather at the top centre. At the middle a heavy black band curves open like a horn around a black ovoid, both scored with dashed white, a broad white spiral turning behind. A cream disc holds overlapping yellow, orange and navy circles; a black oval rimmed in blue carries pink letterforms. White looping glyphs fill the lower third.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who arrived at abstraction years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and working professionally as a botanical and landscape painter, she began in 1906 the vast cycle she called The Paintings for the Temple — swans, altarpieces, spirals and the ten great sheets of The Ten Largest — guided by her involvement with theosophy and the spiritualist group known as The Five. Convinced the work would not be understood in her lifetime, she left instructions that it not be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Her paintings are held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
