A Hilye (or Hilya) is a uniquely Ottoman calligraphic form — a devotional panel inscribed with a hadith description of the physical appearance and moral qualities of the Prophet Muhammad, arranged in a standardised layout of circular, rectangular, and marginal fields. Emerging as an art form in 17th-century Istanbul, the Hilye became one of the most collected objects in the Ottoman world: to possess one was believed to confer a blessing equivalent to seeing the Prophet in person. The finest examples — combining mastery of multiple scripts with an exquisite sense of visual composition — are among the treasures of Ottoman art.
