A fishing boat drifts on water broken into silver light

A single fishing boat stands close to the viewer, its dark hull low in the water beneath a large tan sail and a smaller mizzen behind. One boatman sits in the stern in a grey-green jacket and pale hat, working a long oar. A broad path of broken silver light runs down the centre of the water from a misty horizon, and the sea deepens from pale silver to strong blue at the foot of the sheet. A cluster of smaller boats with grey and tan sails lies at the upper left with their reflections beneath them, and a scatter of distant sails marks the horizon at the right. The sky is a soft cream and lavender haze.

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) came to woodblock printing from Western-style oil painting, and brought a painter's eye for light to shin-hanga. He worked first with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and from 1925 ran his own studio, supervising the carving and printing himself and often issuing a single design in several colourways to catch a different hour of the day. His travels through the Japan Alps, India, Egypt, Europe and North America gave the movement its widest geographic range. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
