Tortoises crowd the rocks as visitors lean over a green pond

A weeping willow fills the upper left with long trailing green branches, and a five-storey pagoda rises behind the trees at the centre, its grey roofs stacked under a tall finial. A stone embankment curves round a turquoise pond, with more willows and dark pines along the far bank and small figures walking the path behind. At the near edge a crowd has gathered: women in blue, brown-patterned and purple-striped kimono, several with small children carried on their backs, and figures in white summer robes crouching at the water. Tortoises cluster on the wet dark rocks at the centre, shells mottled pale, heads out over the water; a child in a yellow-spotted kimono leans towards them.

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) came to woodblock printing from Western-style oil painting, and brought a painter's eye for light to shin-hanga. He worked first with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and from 1925 ran his own studio, supervising the carving and printing himself and often issuing a single design in several colourways to catch a different hour of the day. His travels through the Japan Alps, India, Egypt, Europe and North America gave the movement its widest geographic range. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
