Climbers huddle round a fire under a dark rock overhang

Five men crowd together beneath a deep rock overhang, its ceiling a mass of blue-black stone. A small fire burns orange at the lower right and throws its light across them: one sits with his back to the viewer in a pale ochre jacket, another in dark navy has a pale cloth tied over his head, a third wears a white cap, and one face at the centre turns towards the viewer with a hand raised to his head. A wooden crate stands among them. Through the mouth of the cave at the upper left the daylight shows yellow-ochre boulders, a strip of pale sky and a green slope.

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) came to woodblock printing from Western-style oil painting, and brought a painter's eye for light to shin-hanga. He worked first with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and from 1925 ran his own studio, supervising the carving and printing himself and often issuing a single design in several colourways to catch a different hour of the day. His travels through the Japan Alps, India, Egypt, Europe and North America gave the movement its widest geographic range. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
