A brick city gate stands black against a gold dusk sky
Hiroshi Yoshida — Dainan Gate, Mukden | Japanese Woodblock Print (Shin Hanga)
Note: Framed prints require slightly longer production time
A grey brick city wall runs the width of the sheet, pierced at the centre by a deep arched tunnel. Above it sits a timber gatehouse with red pillars and latticed windows under a heavy dark tiled roof that sweeps up at the corners. The sky behind grades from dusty pink at the top down to gold along the wall. Low shopfronts with hanging signboards line the left, figures in blue and dark robes standing before them. In the foreground two vendors sit at low tables — one in olive, one in mustard — with matting and wares spread on the bare earth beside a dark drainage channel. A cart with a parasol waits near the arch, and a low tiled building closes the scene at the right.
Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) came to woodblock printing from Western-style oil painting, and brought a painter's eye for light to shin-hanga. He worked first with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and from 1925 ran his own studio, supervising the carving and printing himself and often issuing a single design in several colourways to catch a different hour of the day. His travels through the Japan Alps, India, Egypt, Europe and North America gave the movement its widest geographic range. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
