Reef fish drift in flat turquoise water behind aquarium glass

Six fish float across a flat turquoise ground, with the faint dark shapes of rocks showing behind them. A golden-yellow fish with a long snout and a red line down its back swims at the top; below it two large pale grey-white fish carry vivid orange-red patches at the mouth and blue-grey fins. To the left a chocolate-dark fish turns towards the viewer with a bold orange flash behind its head and blue-edged fins, and a yellow-and-white striped fish passes out of the frame beside it. At the lower right two Moorish idols banded in black, white and yellow trail long white dorsal filaments. Nothing else occupies the sheet — the fish hang in open water.

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) came to woodblock printing from Western-style oil painting, and brought a painter's eye for light to shin-hanga. He worked first with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and from 1925 ran his own studio, supervising the carving and printing himself and often issuing a single design in several colourways to catch a different hour of the day. His travels through the Japan Alps, India, Egypt, Europe and North America gave the movement its widest geographic range. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
