Wisteria hangs over a drum bridge above still green water

A steep humpbacked drum bridge arches across the centre of the sheet in pale grey timber. Wisteria in full flower hangs from a trellis along the whole top edge, long racemes in mauve and violet falling against yellow-green leaves and the lattice behind them. Visitors crowd the crest of the bridge and the path at its foot, small figures in red, orange and blue. More trellis runs along the left bank on wooden posts, a stone lantern stands beneath the arch and a small grey-roofed building closes the right. The lower half is a broad, still green pond that holds the whole arch and the row of posts in long dark reflections, its surface drawn with fine ripple lines.

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) came to woodblock printing from Western-style oil painting, and brought a painter's eye for light to shin-hanga. He worked first with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and from 1925 ran his own studio, supervising the carving and printing himself and often issuing a single design in several colourways to catch a different hour of the day. His travels through the Japan Alps, India, Egypt, Europe and North America gave the movement its widest geographic range. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
