A pink mountain over red roofs and dark still water

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) trained as a painter long before he became famous for woodblock prints. He studied Western-style oil and watercolour painting in Kyoto and Tokyo, exhibited in Detroit, Boston and Washington in the 1900s, and travelled through Europe, North America and Asia painting on the road. The prints he began issuing from his own studio in 1925 grew directly out of this painting practice, which is why they carry effects of light and weather that traditional woodblock rarely attempted. Work by him is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.
