A weeping plum in blossom leans over a small roofed gate

A small roofed timber gate stands in a dry-stone wall at the centre of the sheet, and a weeping plum tree leans over it from the right, its bare dark branches hung with pink blossom against a pale pink-cream sky. Through the open gate a woman in blue holds a small child in red and white by the hand; another woman in a blue-and-white striped kimono with a red obi stands just outside it. Dark pines and dense green trees rise behind the wall, and a broad plain ground of sandy orange fills the foreground, edged with a line of loose stones.

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) came to woodblock printing from Western-style oil painting, and brought a painter's eye for light to shin-hanga. He worked first with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and from 1925 ran his own studio, supervising the carving and printing himself and often issuing a single design in several colourways to catch a different hour of the day. His travels through the Japan Alps, India, Egypt, Europe and North America gave the movement its widest geographic range. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
