A weeping cherry hangs its blossom over a red temple hall

A great weeping cherry fills the left of the sheet, its dark trunk rising past the top edge and its long branches, hung with pink blossom, drooping across the whole composition and propped on tall bamboo poles. Behind it a red-lacquered temple hall with a grey tiled roof stands at the centre among dark green trees. Beneath the tree a woman in a purple kimono stands, others in teal-patterned kimono sit on mats spread on the grass, and a small child in an orange jacket with a dark pattern walks away across the lawn. A tan path runs across the foreground under a pale pink-cream sky.

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) came to woodblock printing from Western-style oil painting, and brought a painter's eye for light to shin-hanga. He worked first with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and from 1925 ran his own studio, supervising the carving and printing himself and often issuing a single design in several colourways to catch a different hour of the day. His travels through the Japan Alps, India, Egypt, Europe and North America gave the movement its widest geographic range. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
