Deer gather round a tea stall beneath a towering cedar

A single great cedar rises through the centre of the sheet, its dark spreading foliage filling the top while blue-grey cedars recede into mist behind. At the left a small tea stall with a thatched roof opens onto the path, a red cloth spread over its bench and two figures inside, one in blue; a tall stone lantern stands beside it with a hanging sign. A herd of tan deer has gathered around the stall — one in the foreground with its dappled back to the viewer and ears raised, others standing at the bench or lying on the sand. The path runs on into the trees under a pale cream sky.

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) came to woodblock printing from Western-style oil painting, and brought a painter's eye for light to shin-hanga. He worked first with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and from 1925 ran his own studio, supervising the carving and printing himself and often issuing a single design in several colourways to catch a different hour of the day. His travels through the Japan Alps, India, Egypt, Europe and North America gave the movement its widest geographic range. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
