Ito Shinsui (1898–1972) was the supreme bijinga artist of the Shin Hanga movement — the painter of Japanese women whose prints combine psychological depth, chromatic refinement, and an unmatched sensitivity to textile and gesture. Championed by publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, his portraits — bathing women, women at mirrors, women in the rain — are among the most collectible of all 20th-century Japanese prints and are held in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and major museums worldwide.
