John James Audubon (1785–1851) was an American ornithologist and painter whose Birds of America (1827–1838) remains the most celebrated work of natural history illustration ever produced — 435 life-size hand-coloured aquatint engravings of every species of bird in North America, executed with a combination of scientific accuracy and painterly drama that no subsequent ornithological work has surpassed. Now held in museums and private collections worldwide, individual plates from Birds of America regularly achieve six-figure prices at auction.
