Jan Brandes (1743–1808) was a Dutch Reformed minister and self-taught draughtsman who accompanied the Dutch East India Company to Batavia and Ceylon in the 1770s and 1780s, producing a remarkable body of observational drawings — landscapes, figures, botanical studies, and decorative works — that are now held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. His graphic facility and eye for pattern make his decorative drawings among the most distinctive works of late-18th-century Dutch draughtsmanship.
